The musician and composer Nacho Mastreta has just
released his second album. Luna de Miel (Honeymoon)
is the title given to this album, which is on Spanish label,
Subterfuge Records. Mastreta is an artist that
made a name for himself in Spain with the release of his first
record, Melodías de Rayos X (X-Ray Melodies),
which was named by Spanish newspaper, El País, best Spanish
electronica album of the '90s, even though it wasn't electronica.
He has also collaborated and created music for fashion designers
and movies. Apart from that, he has worked with Mexican bands
Titan and Liquits as well as with Spanish singer
Tonino Carotone. The maestro now presents a different
type of record that is very interesting. Mastreta is
accompanied by the beautiful female voices of Julieta Venegas,
Ana Belen, Alaska, Rubi, and Cristina
Lliso among others as they perform his songs. He is the
musician and brain but with each one of them he has created
something unique. It's a totally relaxed and sensual album.
With its feminine touch, Luna de Miel (Honeymoon),
manages to tell tales of women in all types of situations. The
lyrics are rich and delicate. The music that accompanies each
song is very special. It has a very lounge-like style and it's
the type of music you would hear at a café or cabaret. Using
a variety of instruments to accomplish the sound he wants, Mastreta
creates a very versatile record. The mix of instruments such
as clarinets, banjos, saxophones, accordions and the sensual,
seductive voices of the 11 women makes the experience of listening
to this record something surprising. Luna de Miel
(Honeymoon) is enriching and very different to a lot of the
music within the Latin Alternative genre; it contains humor,
subtleness, energy, and experiments that very few are willing
to try. The album is a return to Mastreta's musical roots
and he presents a work that is honest and defined. Mastreta
is able to paint on the musical canvas something spectacular
and wonderful. Musicians are painters of sentiment and Mastreta
does in the manner that Picasso would have done were
he a musician, abstract and just pure genius.

WEA
Rock has just released in an exclusive album for the United
States. This occurs rarely here in the United States with Latin
Alternative releases. Many times special editions or collections
are released in Latin America or Europe. Mikel, one half
of Spanish-pop/rock outfit, Duncan Dhu, already has 3
albums as a soloist. His last album, Acróbatas
(Acrobats), has garnered him success in this country. His previous
solo work is very hard to come by here in the United States.
WEA Rock decided to release this compilation which includes
songs from all 3 of Mikel's albums along with 4 unreleased
tracks. Songs like "Eden" and "Camas de Hierba
(Beds of Grass)" are among these exclusive tracks. 7 Años
(7 Years) also has a bonus track that adds more value to this
album. For all the fans of Duncan Dhu and of Mikel,
this is a must have in your collection. You can contact WEA
Rock in order to get the album if you do not live in the United
States.

Degeneración
Actual (Current Degeneracy) is the most recent production
by this Peruvian artist. Pedro Suarez-Vertiz is one of
the most famous and talented rockers that Peru has produced.
This is third album as a soloist due to the fact that he used
to be lead singer of the famous Peruvian band, Arena Hash.
Degeneración Actual (Current Degeneracy) follows
the same formula that has led Pedro to tour the majority
of Latin America and the United States thanks to the success
of previous albums. This album is a good example of how Alternative
Pop can be made without it being pure commercial Pop. This is
an album that can be for an audience of all ages. The lyrics
are about everyday life and experiences, not about political
problems or politics, which a common person can experience.
The subjects range from love, hate, intrigue, anguish, and hope.
This is just a small sample of the variety of topics that this
young artist provides on his album that comes off with good
force and is very contagious. The first single of this album
is "Degeneración Actual (Current Degeneracy)"; it's a
song that is getting heavy airplay in many places. Pedro
is a poet besides being a musician. He knows how he wants his
songs to flow and his lyrics seem to be very introspective.
Degeneración Actual (Current Degeneracy) is a
rock album that can be a building block for people who are trying
to develop a taste for alternative rock. Like I have already
mentioned, it is a very accessible and friendly record.

The
Cubans from France have arrived! P18 is only one of the
many Latin music acts that are popping up in a country better
known for its wine than its bands. P18 is an extremely
interesting project. This group is made up of ex-members of
famous French band, Mano Negra, like Tom Darnal
alongside a family of Cuban musicians that are part of the group
Ire Ire. This album was a true surprise that caught me
off guard. It is an explosive mix of music! It's a record that
is full of joy and sounds, which are a mix of the Cuban son
with electronica. It's an excellent experiment and totally worth
listening to. Thank God that Higher Octave World has decided
to release Urban Cuban on our side of the pond.
We would have really been missing out on something special!
I totally recommend this one for your CD collection, especially
if you are into electronica and also enjoy Cuban music.

What
do you call 4 girls and one male companion that play Power Pop?
Well, the answer is Porfolio (Portfolio)! This band of
talented women from Puerto Rico has an attitude that is very
positive and full of hope. Their songs contain lyrics that speak
out against social injustice and also talk about topics that
are relevant to today's youth. It's rare to see a Latin Alternative
band that is made up of women in its majority. That's how it
is with this band. They are: Sara Rios (Bass / Vocals),
Gabriela Rodriguez (Guitar), Tania Garcia (Vocals),
Annette Hestres (Keyboards), and "Pocho" Cepero
(Drums). They all write and create their wonderful songs. One
of the best tracks on this album, is the beautiful and endearing
love ballad "Lo Mejor de Tí (Your Best)." They have much
on their island that inspires them to make the music that they
do Hablen Ya (Speak Out). They are very talented
and they use this in order to help others, especially kids who
are in need. They do a lot of benefit shows in Puerto Rico.
Porfolio (Portfolio) is just one more band that is part
of the ever-growing rock scene on Puerto Rico which everyday
is gaining ground as one of the most important in Latin America.
