Welcome to the Restaurant. One of the best selling
albums in recent years in Mexico has finally been released in
the U.S. Jumbo, another band from the Monterrey alternative
scene, brings a fresh and uncommon sound from Mexico. This band
has been around for years and used to be known as Blueswagen.
Their sound could be categorized as "noise-pop" inspired by
or similar to brit-pop which is really enjoyable. Restaurant
is a perfect album to listen to with your loved one. "Monotransistor"
is the track that starts of this nutricious musical meal. The
lyrics are excellent and the production quality is top-notch.
The album is produced by Oscar López and "Chuy"
Flores. They have both worked with some of the biggest
bands in Latin alternative music. It is easy to see on this
album why they attract all types of fans. The songs are hard-edged
yet pop enough to attract the hardest rock fans to people who
don't really like the genre. With this album, Jumbo shows
why they aren't just another band from Monterrey. On each song,
the execution is excellent from the melodic guitar riffs to
the pounding bass lines. A song may start slow and depressing
but all of a sudden explode into a wonderful sound that generate
a great vibe. A perfect example is the song "Aquí (Here)."
This album is an American/British record except for the fact
that it is sung in Spanish. Another thing to note is that their
vocalist, Castillo, sings better in English than in Spanish.
The only unfortunate thing is that this album doesn't contain
a song in Shakespeare's language. This album is really one of
the best records recently released by BMG in the Latin
Alternative genre. I give this "Restaurant" 5
stars!

La Barranca (The Ravine) is definitely one of the most
unique bands that Mexico has. Many times they don't receive
the recognition that they deserve. They return with a new label
but with the same magic of their 2 previous albums. Rueda
de los Tiempos (Wheel of the Times) is a very special
work of art that this band has created. For those who don't
know, they were Saul Hernandez's band on the first Jaguares'
album, El Equilibrio de Los Jaguares (The Equilibrium
of the Jaguars). For many obvious reasons, a lot of people noticed
the change in musicians on the new Jaguares album. The
good thing is that La Barranca (The Ravine) is a band
in itself with its own style and defined sound. Jose Manuel
Aguilera and Federico Fong along with Alfonso
Andre as a guest, create the magical sound that this band
possesses. This new album maintains the same elements from the
previous ones along with the unique guitar playing of Aguilera,
who may be the best guitarist in Mexico. This album also contains
that Cuban influenced rock mixed with folkloric music. The album
has a very particular sound that is wonderful to listen to.
This time the band used samplers and loops on the tracks. They
also integrate instruments such as the stick, the marimba, and
the xylophone. With guest musicians such as Alejandro Otaola
of Santa Sabina playing guitars on many tracks along
with the gifted voice of rocker Cecilia Toussaint, La
Barranca (The Ravine) has been able to create a record that
opens the emotions and fills the musical soul. It is a very
fun record to listen to as it has a melancholic feel combined
with some good rock and roll. The first single, "Llueve
(It Rains)," is a song where all the musical elements and guest
musicians come together and is able to present the band's musical
style. The strength of the poetry in the lyrics makes this album
even more worthwhile. In my opinion, it is their best one yet.
The use of ancient Aztec phrases, the hallucinating melodies,
and the reference to circles takes one to another dimension.
The album's title clearly reflects the record itself; it is
a circle of wonderful emotions for all times. Having tracks
like "Tambor (Drum)", "Paraíso Elemental (Elemental
Paradise)", and "Estallido Interno (Internal Explosion)",
La Barranca (The Ravine) has created a perfect jewel,
which produces a flowing river of great emotions. Also, the
really different voice of Jose Manuel makes the circle
of La Barranca (The Ravine) something perfect. It is
not an album for people who like hard-core sounds because it
is nothing like that. However, if you want to travel and dream
then by all means get it.

We
received from Spain the self-titled first album of the band
L.O.L.A. This band with their vocal leader, Isabel
Urzaiz, presents a record full of some wonderful songs that
have pop lyrics but with hard-edged alternative music that makes
it effective. It's a band that like The Cranberries,
does not limit itself to make music based on one format or sound,
but creates music for what it is, EMOTION. This band has songs
that show their total energy and maintain that fidelity to themselves.
A song that stands out immediately and is an example of this
band's force is "Dos Caras." This song is an explosion
of feminine power with rock as the weapon. The album in general
gives you this feeling, that of a band that has female singer
that isn't necessarily sweet but can be something aggressive
and powerful. Their label, Tin Records, totally supports
this band and lets them do what they like. That is why many
times it's a plus to be on an indie label. This is perfect because
then the world lose the opportunity of listening to a great
band from the Iberian peninsula. Standout Tracks:

Venezuela has
some pretty good ska and rock bands. That's not the only style
of music that is produced there either. Hip-Hop has been gaining
ground for some time now. It was a true surprise to listen
to this rap album. The quality is among the best ever produced
in Latin America. La Corte (The Court) presents their
second album titled Imperia (Imperial). This
album had a variety of beats and sounds that create a buffet
of hip-hop that includes popular Latin rhythms, mixes, and
beats from the streets of New York. La Corte definitely
is among the best hip-hop groups in Latin America. Their songs
are really fun and the music is really catchy. They mix good
salsa, the old school type, with hip-hop to create something
they call "El Salso." The first track is "Hierro (Iron)"
and immediately captures your attention. Other tracks are
"Guayaba", "Leche (Milk)", and "Cedula
(ID)." This Venezuelan group has an amazing talent that can
only parallel other groups like Control Machete from
Mexico and Tiro de Gracia from Chile. The reason for
this comparison is because Imperia captured
my attention just like when I heard Control's Mucho
Barato or Ser Humano (Human Being) by
Tiro de Gracia for the first time. La Corte
is made up of 5 persons and a surprise was the inclusion of
female M.C. Apolonia is this M.C. which gives opinions
from a female's point of view during the album. This is really
not common because for one thing there aren't many hip-hop
groups in Latin America, much less groups with a female M.C.
I can only really think of Makiza from Chile who also
has a female. Another one of the members isn't Venezuelan
but Cuban. However, behind everything that this group is,
lies the brain in the form of DJ 13 alias Tony Armas.
He was born in New York City and that East Coast hip-hop sound
is totally evident on this album. If you like hip-hop then
this is a must for your music collection. Excellent quality
by the group who wants to establish it's hip-hop empire in
Latin America.

Hip-Hop
is a worldwide phenomenon and Latin America isn't the exception.
While there are groups like Control Machete and Tiro
de Gracia, that have garnered the attention of many,
hip-hop in a lot of places is still an underground movement.
In Uruguay that is the case and from the hip-hop crew, Oeste
ProFunk, the first group named La Teja Pride (Davich,
Leonidas y DJ Irish) has released an EP. This
group presents a production that is full of hip-hop with more
of an alternative edge and different to many others. Their lyrics
are explicit but the songs have a touch of jazz and also use
a good amount of samplers. Among these you will find material
that includes James Brown, Todos Tus Muertos,
and No Doubt. DJ Irish has good turntable skills
and is pretty impressive. It is nice to find out that there
is different music out there and that in Latin America there
are a lot of groups that are still being creative. This is a
plus for music in general. Maybe the best cut on this EP is
"Mi Lado del Monte (My Side of the Hill)." It's a track
full of pure hip-hop with a strong urban sound. This EP contains
9 tracks and among these are some containing instrumental beats.
La Teja Pride is just one of the many groups in Uruguay
that are doing hip-hop along with others like Victimas del
Sistema (Victims of the System) and Lado Oscuro (The
Dark Side).

This is a record that is sexually charged and opens your desires.
The future of Peruvian Rock is in the hands of this band that
has just released their second album and first for a major label
(Sony Music). However, this is the album that allowed for them
to be signed. When one listens to this album one will be able
to understand why the band is called Libido. You are
taken to a state of ecstasy of sound and emotion that makes
you tremble. The songs are of excellent quality and they have
a deep meaning. The band creates their savage sound with the
incredible riffs of their guitars and the vocalist, Salim
Vera, gives the finishing touch to an already charged group.
Even though this album was an indie production, one can see
that a lot was invested into this record. It not only was mixed
and mastered at Cedar Creek Studios in Austin, TX but the whole
quality of the album is excellent. There are a lot of pleasant
surprises coming from different countries and Peru is just another
of those who is leaving their mark on the Latin Alternative
scene. This album is emotionally charged and aggressive just
like sex, so enjoy!

Hembra
(Female) is the title of the new album by the Peruvian band
of the moment, Libido. This is the highly anticipated
second album from the band that seems to have suddenly captured
the imagination of the Peruvian rock scene. Of course this
didn't happen suddenly; they have been working a while now
on garnering success and recognition by music fans in their
country. This is their first album for the Sony Music Peru
label and was produced by famed Argentine producer/musician
Tweety Gonzalez. This album was recorded at Estudios
Panda in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was engineered
and mixed at Scream Studios in Los Angeles by Doug
Trantow (Limp Bizkit, Orgy) and Jay Gion.
The mastering was also done in Los Angeles. It was done by:
Eddy Schreyer (The Offspring, Korn, Fiona
Apple) at Oasis Mastering. This record can be cataloged
as one to seduce your significant other. It could be called
a prequel to their first album, which is more appropriate
for when you are already with your significant other. So is
this "Episode I"? In reality Hembra (Female)
has an excellent quality. The band's lyrics remain sensual,
deep, and very symbolic. One can easily notice a more mature
band that has more experience under their belt. The album
starts off immediately with a bang with the first track titled
"Tres (Three)" and this is the beginning of a deep
journey that will include songs like "Hembra (Female)",
"Nectar", "Eterno (Eternal)," and "En Esta
Habitación (In This Room)." This last track is a poem
full of sadness and passion. That every song is an event created
by your basic alternative pop-rock sounds with a mixture of
some heavy and even classical sounds since one can even notice
the presence of violins on some tracks. The music and lyrics
are exquisitely woven by the incredible vocals of Salim
Vera. He has to be one of the best vocalists of any Latin
American band that can include others such as Saul Hernandez
of Jaguares, Jose Luis Abreu of El Manjar
de los Dioses, Gustavo Cerati (ex-Soda Stereo),
and Nrü of Cafe Tacuba. Why can this be stated?
A reason is that his voice captures a specific energy and
he is able to take the lyrics and musical tones to another
level that defines his band. He is constant in energy but
his voice can rise and fall at levels that aren't normally
possible. He creates an aura and a strange mysticism. Hembra
(Female) creates the sentiment of desperation, anguish, love,
heartbreak, and a throbbing cry all at once. It is complex
like the human libido. That's why this band made so much noise
with their first album and this second record is just the
beginning, if they want, of a very important career in the
Latin Alternative scene. Congratulations to them and to Tweety
who has been able to bring out the best in them.

The Argentine band, Los Pericos (The Parakeets), is back
with a brand new album under their belt. They recently released
their brand new record titled 1000 Vivos (1000
Live Ones). This album is a celebration of their more than 10
years in existence and their more than 1000 concerts around
the world during that span. It is a record that was recorded
live during two important concerts. It was recorded during their
10th anniversary concert in Buenos Aires on December 28, 1997
and also at their concert at Teatro Opera on September 1, 1999.
The band loved the recordings so much that they decided to make
it an album as a thank you to their many loyal fans. This is
basically a greatest hits album and they have generated a bunch
of hits through the years. It includes songs from popular albums
such as Pampas Reggae, Mystic Love,
and Yerba Buena (Good Herb). There are famous
songs like "Runaway", "Parate y Mira (Stand Up
and Look)", "Pupilas Lejanas (Distant Pupils)," and "No
Me Pares (Don't Stop Me)." This album is also full of special
musical guests from the Argentine alternative scene which include:
Los Autenticos Decadentes, Zeta Bosio of Soda
Stereo, Fito Páez, Guillermo Bonetto of Los
Cafres, Walter Ríos, Sami Abadi, and Juanse.
The quality of the production is excellent and really captures
their spirit and energy. This is a remarkable album for a remarkable
band that for years has created fun and positive music. Their
reggae styling have been a favorite of many. Their hard work
has been recognized by fans and that's why they are one of the
most loved and respected groups in Latin America. Congratulations
guys on your 1000 shows and we wish you 1000 more!

Alvaro,
Titae, Angel and Pancho once again release
another jewel and this maybe their best one yet. La Sangre
en el Cuerpo (Blood on the Body) is one of the most
anticipated albums from one of the most important bands in Latin
America. Los Tres (The Three) have always been known
for making music with quality that has been influenced by jazz,
pop, rock, and cueca, the traditional music of Chile. The album
is a true pleasure to listen to. From the first cut to the last,
this record takes you on a voyage of feelings that range from
desperation to being madly in love. It has been rumored that
this album is a love letter to Mexican rocker, Julieta Venegas,
wife of lead vocalist Alvaro Henriquez. If that's the
case, then he is really in love! La Sangre en el Cuerpo
(Blood on the Body) contains the music that defines them as
a group but you can also note the ever changing sound to them
that few groups can do as years go by. We can only hope that
Sony Alternativo (Sony Latin Rock) will release this album in
the United States, now that their previous album, Fome,
was not edited here. Anyhow, you have to add this one to your
must-have pile.

The most recent
album by this Chilean band leaves you with the desire to listen
to it over and over again. Starting with the first track,
"Flotar es Caer (To Float is to Fall)" to the last
track, Lucybell has created a superb album. They produced
the album themselves which is just a hallucinating ride and
his some wonderfully executed arrangements. The recording
was done in Chile, it was mixed in Argentina, and the mastering
was done at Abbey Road Studios in London by Chris
Blair. He is known for his work with Radiohead.
This album is better than their previous album titled, Viajar
(Travel), which by the way was excellent. All lyrics are by
vocalist Claudio Valenzuela and the British influence
on the music is present. These Chileans create a sound that
captures you and doesn't let you go. The melodic and unique
voice of Claudio Valenzuela helps to set the mood of
this album that is better known as "the red one." It is now
obvious that Lucybell just gets better with every album.
They are already working on their 4 full-length which will
probably continue their success.
