Orixa
One of the oldest bands in the U.S. Latin Rock scene is Orixa
from San Francisco. While a lot of people see Los Angeles as
the capital of the Latin Alternative scene in the states, these
guys from the bay area have successfully managed to be part
of the scene and more than that, show that they are definitely
among the most talented. Orixa began around 7 years ago
and already have 2 albums under their belt. The group is made
up of singer Rowan Jimenez of Caracas, Venezuela, the
Caipo family from Perú (brothers Eddie "El Brujo"
and Juan Manuel and their cousin Mark) and "El
Diablo" Yturriago-Lopez from Puerto Rico.
Their
first album, Orixa, was released in 1996 by Aztlán
Records. This album received very positive reviews and
recently was recommended by La Banda Elástica
as one of those important records to have in one's colecction.
After a long time, Orixa has just recently released
their long-awaited second album, 2012 e.d (elegua digital)
under their own label Elegua Records.
The
sound this band has is of total fusion. They combine a wide
range of rhythms from rock and ska to hip-hop and Afro-Cuban
music. They themselves give a name to their style of music.
They call it Latin Ruckus. They are right about that title;
the energy that this ruckus is full of captures anyone's attention.
They have definitely matured as a band and this can be seen
when both albums are compared. That is a reason why it took
them a while to put out another album. They wanted to take
time to really work and develop their sound.
Orixa
has a purpose behind their music. They want to be able to
please and bring joy to those who take the time to listen
to them. It doesn't matter what culture you are from, their
music will make you dance. It's no coincidence that they happen
to be one of the bay-area's most popular bands in any language.
They are one of the few Spanish-speaking bands that have a
big Anglo following.
The
band has performed for thousands where they have shared the
stage with many different acts and at many different festivals.
For example, they have shared the stage with groups like Cypress
Hill, Ozomatli, Café Tacuba, and La Maldita
Vecindad. They have been part of the Warped and
Watcha Tours. They were also the first Latin Rock band
to be a headliner at the famous Fillmore Sessions at
the Fillmore Theatre in San Francisco.
