Libido
This week we give focus to a band that in very little time
has captured the attention of many. This band is Libido
and they have been able to have much success within Peru and
quickly are letting themselves be known in other parts. They
are among the new wave of talent that is being offered by
Peruvian Rock. That scene for many years were represented
by bands like G-3, Arena Hash, Miki Gonzalez
y Nosequien y los Nosecuantos. Libido is just one
of the many bands that are making headway in the Lima rock
scene along with others such as Dolores Delirio and
the now defunct Liga del Sueño (League of Dreams).
Libido was
formed in '96 when Jeffry, Salim, Manolo,
and Toño got together to make music that they felt
and wanted to show to the world. All of them had a big interest
in music and in one way or another had studied it and had
the talent to make it. Libido was formed in order to
give life to what they already had inside.
Immediately they
dedicated themselves to seriously work, rehearse, play, and
make a name for themselves. The first shows for the public
of Lima were a great challenge, knowing that many times people
are not ready or open to listen to new bands. What they saw
however was a very positive response from people and this
inspired them to keep working in order to develop the sound
that people could associate with Libido.
With time they
were able to develop the sound. It's a sound that takes the
listener to level of extasy and emotion which was a force
being eminated from these 4 guys. It became an unstoppable
force and they displayed it on stage. They participated in
2 rock contests in Peru starting in '96 and through 1997 where
they occupied 2nd place in both contests. They had already
opened the minds of people and their desire to have an album
by this talented band. The specialized rock magazine in Perú,
Phantom, named them one of the bands most likely to
succeed in the national scene.
Libido recorded
their first album in Lima and the mixing and mastering was
done at the famous Cedar Creek Studios in Austin, Texas.
All this was done independently. The result came about in
1998 and it was incredible. The album had an amazing quality
and the artwork was first class. The album was called Libido
and finally the people of Peru had the best album by a Peruvian
Rock band in a long time. The band had captured the intensity
and spirit of the band. This can be heard in every song which
is full of emotion that only music can bring from the sounds
of hard rock to the subtle sounds of a violin. This album
showed that Latin rock records with quality could be made
in other places that weren't Argentina, Mexico, or the U.S.
All the buzz that
this first album generated took the band to heights that many
indie bands just don't get. With constant promotion in and
out of the country someone was able to see that this wasn't
just another band. Their songs could be heard on shows from
Lima to Miami to Buenos Aires. Finally, at the beginning of
this year it was announced that they had been signed by Sony
Music and that renown Argentine producer, Tweety Gonzalez,
would be in charge of producing the next album. They are the
hope of many in Peru and are looking for that so important
breakthrough to other markets. Libido has done in very
little time a lot and that's why in this new stage, they are
ready to give their best and bring the emotion to people that
they themselves discovered in 1996.
