Fiel a La Vega
(Faithful to Vega)
What is behind the name Fiel a la Vega? Surprisingly enough,
we could find that this is one of the most easily recognized names
in Puerto Rico. An "alternative quintet", although just recently
recognized, already has several titles under their belt. As for
example, we could say that of their three previous independent productions,
they sold more than 230 thousand copies, and that the band participated
in several of the greater reputation shows in Puerto Rico in '99.
Formed by the brothers,
Jorge and Pedro Arraiza, Tito Auger, Ricky
Laureano and Papo Ramon, all native of a region of the
Island called Vega. This Puerto Rican quintet formed in 1994 managing
to be one of the first bands of Puerto Rico to play Latin rock,
therefore, changing the Island's musical rules. At first, attracted
by outer influences, they dedicated their times playing music in
English, but as time went by, they began recapturing the importance
of being Fiel (Faithful) to their culture and land. Soon, they discovered
that Latin rock was "chevere" enough and decided to dedicate their
complete attention.
The name, Fiel a La
Vega, was born under pressure, since on the verge of making
copies of one of their previous independent productions, they had
to put a name to the band before they did so. Perhaps they will
be asked, why Fiel a la Vega? "Because the name implies many
things; mainly the fidelity to the place where they were born, and
the fidelity to the roots that constantly manifest in their music".
They define themselves
as a forceful rock band that without judging their immediate surroundings,
they go away to the beach and observe what happens around them.
This could describe in a certain way, the relaxed atmosphere of
their newest production under the label EMI Latin, Tres
(Three), and still more, the title of the first single called: Canción
en La Arena. (Song in The Sand)
Beginning with an introduction
that gives an ample sample of what one will find in the interior;
Tres (Three) is filled with surprises, we find electric
guitars throwing distorted notes, suddenly being contrasted with
pianos "merengueros" and traditional drums telling us why is this
quintet faithful to their culture. With a tone sometimes of total
relaxation, to others of force and desperation, Fiel a La Vega,
shows its versatility within the alternative range, and how it has
managed to be one of the bands with further possibilities of development
from Puerto Rico in this harsh world of Latin rock music.
